Written the year after Dick won the Hugo for The Man in the High Castle, this is a novel of a benign future dictatorship on earth, fighting to avert an alien takeover. The plot involves a time travel-inducing drug, "JJ 180," which later became the name of a punk rock band in the Seventies one of the many ways in which Dick's writings have worked their way into the youth subculture over the years.
